The boys powerlifting team began their season at the HF meet on Thursday, Jan. 29 under the direction of Coach Matt DeYoung.
Overall, eight Buccaneers landed a Top 5 spot in regional standings.
Sophomore Jovanni Gomez, junior Brylee Wilcheck, and junior Kullen Spencer earned 1st place medals while Sophomore Alex Rodriguez placed 2nd, senior Tyrus Bordelon placed 2nd, senior Julien Perez placed 2nd, freshman Jake Houston placed 3rd, and senior Sean Beighley placed 3rd in their respective weight classes.
Gomez set a new school record for a total of 1420 lb with a 550 squat, 365 bench, and 515 deadlift.
“I didn’t even know I was close to breaking the school record,” Gomez said, ” So it was definitely an unexpected surprise at the first meet of the year.”
The powerlifting team will compete at HF again on Thursday, Feb. 5.
